The 18-year-old Sasha Witteveen is a versatile double basisst and has won the first prize at many national and international competitions such as the International Youth Bass Competition in Lucca, the Britten Double Bass Competition, the Prinses Christina Concours and the Viennese Bass Days Competition in Amsterdam.
Sasha is active as a soloist and has given concerts in Het Concertgebouw, Philharmonie Haarlem, DeLaMar Theater and more. She played at festivals such as Klassiek op ‘t Amstelveld, Wonderfeel, the Leidse Hofjes Concerten, the Grachtenfestival and Festival Classique. She has performed with the Residentie Orkest, the NJSO and the LGT Young Soloists.
Sasha regularly gives chamber and orchestral music performances; she has participated in projects with members of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam Sinfonietta and she often collaborates with other promising young musicians. Since 2020 she has been performing with the prestigious European Union Youth Orchestra, which has led to the opportunity to collaborate with the world’s greatest conductors such as Vasily Petrenko and Iván Fischer. Since 2018 she is part of the LGT Young Soloists; an international string ensemble with whom she has performed in prestigious halls in major world cities such as Vienna, Hong Kong, Singapore and more.
Sasha studies with RCO-member Olivier Thiery and Burak Marlali at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, where she will do her final exam next year. She has taken master classes from Rick Stotijn, Božo Paradžik, Matthew McDonald, Wies de Boevé, Dominic Seldis, Gary Karr, Theotime Voisin, Ximo Riera and Nicholas Schwartz.
Since 2016, Sasha has been playing on a double bass from the collection of the Nationaal Muziekinstrumenten Fonds (NMF). In 2019 a double bass, built especially for her by Sergio Scaramelli in Italy, was purchased by the NMF. On loan from the NMF, Sasha now plays this instrument.
